Churchill College: brilliant ‘60’s campus, beguiling new quad (Cowan Court) and a perfect bijou essay in Brutalist poetics – the college chapel with its awesome use of toplight and raw materiality. Quite humbling.

The entrance to Oxford along the A40 is, hmm, underwhelming. A straggling ribbon of suburban housing hardly of sufficient quality to herald a world class city, nor of sufficient density to accommodate the requisite population sustainably.
Here is a sketch proposal we have done for a site on the London Road. The aim is to catalyse a radical increase in the density, sustainability and quality of the primary approach to this wonderful city.

We are delighted to say that our Woodstock Apartments building has been shortlisted for an RIBA South Award 2024. These are the premium UK architecture awards and it is a real accolade to be on the shortlist. It is rare for a building for a private developer to get this far, and a great achievement for our client, Bright Properties, who asked us to design something much better - and more sustainable - than standard developer fare. They were prepared to go the extra mile to get something of real architectural merit; that is pukka patronage. Gazebo Concreto Four: concrete, of course, has a high carbon footprint. So we were clear from the very start that if we were going to use concrete we would need to minimise the embodied carbon and compensate for it by properly and fully offsetting. This could not be done on site so we researched the most effective and assured way to offset and the client has financed the requisite amount of new woodland planting in Yorkshire.

Gazebo Concreto Three: concrete is supremely versatile and can perform extraordinary structural gymnastics. We wanted to exploit these characteristics to the full by cantilevering the canopy out and giving it an airy weightlessness in contrast with its manifest mass. We stood the canopy on four slender columns, and we used a triangular geometry to create a sharp prow. We coffered the soffit and then punctured it with an array of small circular pavement lights, peppering the polished concrete terrace with pools of sunlight.
